Let's see, judging from personal experience ......

Strengths......can control the news media, has lots of money

Weaknesses...... a very corrupt, crooked organization that I don't want to have anything to do with, and neither do any of my co workers, nor does many of the soldiers here in Iraq.

Strengths - all resolutions in the General assembly are non-binding. It has a great mission, however unrealistic. The Security Council has some teeth, but needs to lose France as a permanent member.

Weaknesses - Some see this is a 'world democracy' and take too seriously all of the anti-western rhetoric. The nations that whine the loudest pay little or none, and expect to reap benefits that seek to induce world socialism. Other weaknesses are too many to list, but another would be the abused powers of diplomatic immunity.

Good: Instead of battling it out on the battlefield, its a war of words as diplomats solve conflicts through dialogue and discussion. Instead of tanks and missiles, lets just talk it out. Also, in most sessions, every nation (there are 193 of them) get to have a say. If a nation is wrongly attacked or has civil unrest (e.g. Bosnia, Kosovo, East Timor, Somalia, or Haiti) then the UN can send troops in, after an international consensus by the nations of the world. Bad: This process of dialogue can take months, or even years (or even decades, like North/South Korea, China and Taiwan, and others). When there comes time to do something (Syria), not all the countries are in favor of doing something (Russia, China). This makes the UN appear useless while fighting goes on.

The U.N. is like a club which anyone will be allowed to join.
The individual members of a club will try to obtain the benefits or services which they desire, or need. They will not do this by embracing altruism, but by being self-serving to the detriment of other members. Since all the members will never have exactly the same agenda, they will never agree on a single course of action, except where enough members can band together to enforce their demands .
The U.N is nothing but a begging bowl into which the West is expected to pour money, while receiving nothing in return.

Weaknesses: They don't DO anything. They pass meaningless resolutions they have no intention of backing up. Their peacekeepers have a lot of problems raping little girls they're supposed to be protecting. They screwed up the Oil for Food program entirely. They do things like put Cuba, China, and Saudi Arabia on the Human Rights council. They have done NOTHING to help in Darfur.

Strength: A forum where all the world can make each and every kind of decision on each and everything for the betterment of the world.

Weakness: All the decisions made by the whole world are useless & mean nothing, if five countires disagree.

Its weak cuz countries like China and Russia can use their veto to block and render the UN virtually useless. In Darfur china is vetoing us to help because if the Muslims win china would have access to its oil
For Iraq before we invaded Germany and France were promised by Sadam to get two of the most prominent oil fields in the country if they could keep him in power
UN is too corrupt to work right now

The idea of having a U.N. was not very well considered.--It sounds like a good idea until you you come to understand that all members will vote according to their own selfish interests.
It is then that you see that you had the same set-up before the U.N. existed.
France and Germany extended warm sympathy to the U.S. after 9/11, but later they wanted to distance themselves from us so they would not also become targets. They have now become harsh critics.
