ok.. my question is, I have a laptop with a wifi card that get's a max speed of 54mbps and im living in a huge apartment complex with about 73 unprotected access point's, I use the internet all the time it's reliable and free and now im wanting to connect my playstation 2 game system into the laptop and use the connection the laptop has to give my ps2 free internet so i can play all my favorite game's online. The laptop does not have a modem or a 10/100 ethernet jack, so im guessing if there is a way to do it i need to go buy a 10/100 ethernet card to connect the ps2 and laptop together. please help ! thanks.( also note, I can't access the routers or firewalls, although most of them are 100% unprotected)

The options are a PCMCIA wireless card or a USB ethernet card. Either way, it's cheaper than the wifi adapter for the PS2.

Usings a crossover cable, you can connect the two. If you have XP use ICS (Internet connection sharing) OR Sohoconnect for anything else:

I absolute love that program and stand by it. I used it in conjunction with a hub, crossover cable, a desktop and two laptops.

The documentation for sohoconnect is phenomenal, it has pictures and such.

Finally, to configure the PS2, use this guide:

You'll be making your laptop the DHCP server, so these instructions should be pretty close to the same.

Good luck!

You will need a pcmcia card for the ethernet jack but if you only have one slot then you can only use one card or the other and not both. But you might try a usb solution I think there is a usb device that will give you an ethernet device. But you will need a crossover cable to connect and share your connection with the ps2.

Why bother add a cable between them?

Get the PS2 a wireless card as well, and communicate to it thru one of the access points. That way, both can also get to the internet.

If you do decide to go wired, you will need a NIC card for both devices (can be USB if you'd like) and a cross over ethernet cable (a special cable that reverses the pairs) or a hub/switch of some type. With the dedicated cable, you will also need software to provide DHCP or hardcode the IP addresses (more later).

Options: If you use a wireless access point of your own, even if not connectedto the interanet, it will supply the addresses and let both talk wireless.

If you decide to hard code the IP addresses, use these:
device 1: IP address 192.168.1.1 mask 255.255.255.0
device 2: IP address 192.168.1.2 mask 255.255.255.0
device 3: IP address 192.168.1.3 mask 255.255.255.0
etc.

Leave the DNS, gateway, WINS, etc blank as these services are not part of your network.

I am not sure, however, I think your assumption is correct. You would need a LAN 10/100 NIC for the laptop using crossover cables and all. Does PS2 have a Wireless NIC it can use....I would look into that...
