For all the people out there who have no idea how safe the Philippines is:-
I've lived here for 14 years as a retired Englishman who invested most of his money in a beautiful resort to have a way of life, as opposed to an income, which I do not receive.
I own a 36 foot yacht which I have sailed around the islands of this country and written many articles for magazines about my travels and the knowledge I have of these beautiful islands.
I have lived in 7 third world countries and travelled extensively to 70 more nations during the course of my life ( I haven't finished yet!).
I have never been threatened by anyone at any of the anchorages I have known, nor at any of the villages/towns/cities that I have visited.
This country is:-
The safest country I have ever lived/visited in.
The friendliest native population I have ever encountered.
The easiest (visa, costs, bureaucracy hassles) to live in.
The easiest to travel around and be welcomed by all.
One proviso.... do not be arrogant-listen before speaking.
We are guests in another country and we WILL respect their credo, even if we find fault with it!
Have fun and I hope you find your nirvana here as I did.........

Just got back from spending 2 weeks in Manila and Bulacan, had a blast with my friends who live in the area. I'll be back next Spring, great people and an awesome place to visit. I found it a lot safer than many of the other countries I have been to, just follow the advise given from the above posters and you'll have a great time.

I was in Manila for two days near Ermita. I just came back on the 18th. Now if you carry your money in your right hand and wave it around, or maybe dress in Cowboy boots, You may have problems, but im sure other will agree New York City is more dangerous then Manila. It is safe as long as you are smart and carry yourself properly and confidently. Also its best to be courteous to whoever talks you. Even if they are beggars or just guys wanted to show you around to places of Entertainment.

I traveled on area A back to the U.S., yet that became years in the past. It became a disaster. I waited at Clark for 3 days, spending very very nearly 24 hours an afternoon on the terminal waiting for my call to be observed as. on the time you in addition to would had to be in gown uniform (warm military Blues). I swore then that i could pay my own way if I had to. Are you specific there continues to be military flights to the Philippines now that the U.S. military has left that u . s . a . interior the Eighteen Nineties?

I was in Angeles City this past May which is about 2 hours from Manila. You should have no problems. But like anywhere you go just stay alert of your surroundings. You can also go to the State Departments web site and go to the travel section. They will have a list of countries there, and will have any travel advisories there.

My Filipina friend was robbed there last month, they drove up and grabbed her purse as she was walking to work and drug her a bit, she is ok now. But crime happens anyplace, Manila having about 12 million people I am sure you will meet all types. I suggest you get out of the city if you want to see the country and feel safer, best is to get a guide there.
