There's a moment in the movie "The Prestige" where a magician makes a bird disappear by squashing it. I've seen this trick and I never thought that they were killing the bird. Later, they solve the problem by an elaborate cage that allows the bird to escape. Please tell me that magicians aren't killing birds. If so, I would have thought that PETA would have jumped all over this. Can someone tell me how this trick works?

Bird is trained to escape from cage and make it's way somewhere like up the magicians sleeve the bird then makes its way down the arm when the magician raises his hand to squash the cage.

I saw the Prestige and liked it very much.

The actual killing of birds probably happened a long time ago before PETA was even established. Otherwise I'm sure you'd here plenty of Anti-Magician advertisements. I'm sure they have more modern and safer ways of making sure none of the animals they preform with (whether it be bunnies or birds) are harmed in any way.

Although I cannot tell you how the trick works I can tell you that magicians who work with animals are very careful not to hurt them. The animals ARE their act and if any get hurt or killed they have no act.

They don't kill them. They hide them.
