They've never been practical. They've also never been a rule for government.
They are rules for Christians, in their personal lives, and "practical" doesn't factor in to God's economy.

Simply put, it is because our enemies see this policy as a definite sign of weakness and they exploit it.
We "turned our cheeks" and thought ourselves "blessed" for many years while the Islamic terrorists continued killing innocent Americans around the globe - and when the events of 9/11 took place - enough is enough - time to put away the pen and get out the sword!

Who said beliefs had to be practical to be good?
Like Ruth said, these beliefs or principles never were practical, since there was always war and intolerance in the world.
That is why Jesus also said (to paraphrase) "Those who follow me will not be loved by the world."

Those are meant to be applied personally on an individual basis, not nationally. The Bible is clear when it comes to the responsibilities of governments and government officials to protect the citizens under their control.

Mans law always trumps The so called religious laws of God . Thou shall not kill .God was allowed to kill but never sanctioned or asked man to kill if you read your religious texts .He did the destroying and killing along with his angels .
So people who claim to be Christians are not allowed to kill . Render unto Ceazar that which is Ceazers and unto God that which is Gods was not an endorsement of killing . It was meant for man to work with his brothers and sisters to create a better society as long as Ceazar did not ask you to break Gods laws . Then as a Christian it was your duty to render to God his holy laws .And thou shall not kill is one as I recall .
