Sounds like a simple question, but it is a bit complicated. I'm assuming you mean over-the-air channels, not cable or satellite since these would pretty much be universal.
The original channels were 1 to 13. Channel 1 was deleted very early on. When UHF broadcasting was established, the channels were numbered 14 through 83. So at that point there were 82 channels. The upper UHF channels were re-assigned to other uses a few years ago.
We are now transitioning to digital TV or DTV. There are at least 65 DTV channels that I know of. Once the system is fully converted to DTV, the original channels will be re-assigned to other services.

Way more than we can possibly watch. I have Dish with over 140 some channels and I STILL can't find anything good to watch on occasion!!!

currently somewhere between 500 and 600 channels. It is actually growing and lessening each and ecery day as they start, merge, and stop on a regular basis.

Every city has a few, so there are thousands. If you are just referring to networks there are probably hundreds. The major ones are ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX.

a whole bunch when you have satellite over 1000 but if you just have regular cable maybe 100

I have cable and there are over 400. I'm in Phoenix, AZ. Where are you and how many do you have there?
