like, not specific like salsa or ballroom. I guess hip hop would be closest to what I'm looking for. I mean, a class where you could learn to move in a way that might be useful when going out to a club, or dancing at a party.

I am kinetically quite stupid and can't pick up stuff from just watching people informally. I think I need remedial attention by taking a class where someone will break it up for me piece by piece and we all practice it. what kind of class would this be? what would it be called? basic movement? does anyone have specific places to recommend in new york/northern nj?

Some ballroom studios, especially in the US, offer classes in nightclub, hip hop, etc. (and almost all in salsa). There are a few foot position differences between ballroom and ballet, for instance, but all the formal dances (as opposed to street dances) teach essentially the same basics, because they are basic: if you're standing with your weight on your right foot, your left foot can move back, forward, or to the side, or on a diagonal. That's BASIC. The rest is built from there. A few beginner classes will get you going. A lot of people think they're going to learn tricks and fancy moves from day one. Put your preconceptions aside, as they'll be wildly off, and check it out. By the way, many studios offer a really inexpensive beginner package that's perfect for you to sample. I'd try beginner American ballroom and hip hop for starters, in that order.

I don't think there is such thing offered... but when I was traning for ballroom dancing, the first few hours were spent on just walking correctly, how to stand correctly and how to hold your dance space. Then we paired up with an instructor and together, we just walked. This is before any steps were introduced.

If this is what you are looking for, you might be able to get it from dance schools, such as Fred Astair chains.

ive been taking dance instructions considering i replaced into 5 and sick inform you that both instructions that help you out the most are jazz and ballet. Jazz elements the necessary steps and also you'll be able to do different instructions like tap and hip hop with those steps, Ballet is the kind that you want in all kinds because it teaches you procedures to apply your hands and factor ft with out messing up some thing else of the body. SO both instructions ARE extremely good!!

Dance courses usually cover all types of dances. It usually takes at least a week to go through certain styles.
