I've been to Lake Michigan, and Lake Erie in the summertime, and the sand is so hot, you either wear flip flops or shoes. To go barefoot is only possible next to the water where the waves keep getting it wet.

This is just a hypothesis because I am not familiar with the Dominican Republic sand. But, there are tropical beaches which appear to be sand but are actually finely ground particles of coral. Their specific heat is different from sand and they don't normally feel so hot.

But putting that aside, I am in Mexico and the temperature is always about 85 degrees and the beaches are only difficult to walk on in the summer even though the temperature is only a few degrees higher. It has to do with the sun being right overhead rather than at an angle to the sand. Another possibility.
