Yes.

Many possible ways, two most common:
Temperature sensor indicates overheating conditions because the coolant is not moving enought to cool the engine.

Low coolant levels, again causing the engine to overheat.

By itself, it won't cause the check engine light to come on until a sensor triggers a problem to cause the check engine light to appear.

In and of itself the leaking water pump will not register the check engine light because its operation is not monitored by the PCM.

However, if you let the coolant level drop low enough (which shouldn't take long with a leaking WP) the low coolant condition could trigger any one of several codes if it causes the engine to overheat.

Or you might just have a leaking water pump AND some other problem - which is just as likely.

Of course if you already know your water pump is leaking why are you taking the chance of completely wrecking your engine. Just replace the darned thing already.

no, it shouldn't. a leaky water pump is just a leak. if the check engine light is on it could be that the leak has caused your coolant level to drop to the point where a sensor has picked up a signal that there is not enough coolant. i would get it repaired as soon as possible. in the mean time make sure the radiator and overflow container are filled to their proper level.

no,,it wont,,only if your loosing enough coolant to get it hot,,other wise the water pump is not monitored by the computer on any vehicle,,i own a repair shop, and can ask any mechanic they,ll tell you the same thing,,good luck hope this help,s.,,have a good x-mas.,,PS if its loosing a lot,it will trigger the low coolant light to come on,and may trigger a temperature sensor,,but the pump its self isn't monitored ,good luck.

Only if you loose enough coolant to trigger a low coolant level condition.
