the saying is "you can not have your cake and eat it too." literally meaning, once you start eating your cake, it will be gone and therefore you no longer have it.
figuratively meaning, you can not have something both ways when only one way is allowed at a time.

You can't have it if you eat it. If you eat it, it will no longer be there sitting on the plate, all pretty and decorated.
I guess what it means is, you can't save something and use it at the same time.
