They knew they would make at least 2 from the start, both centering around Apollo Creed vs. Rocky. The 3rd was built off of the success of the first 2, and the 4th was made to expose and trump the Russian use of anabolic steroids in their Olympians and show that a hard working american can beat a russian machine with true grit. The 5th movie was a freaking joke, and is the reason why Stallone was willing to do the 6th, so that the series would not end on a horrible note. I hear Hogan makes a Cameo in this new one, I am going Saturday, and I love Tarver too.

Don't know. I saw in interview with sly's brother on ESPN2 one night during a broadcast of Rocky. He said that when sly wrote it he was living in a station wagon. So my guess is that he was just planning the first one but he probably had an outcome in mind for the character.

No. The first Rocky script was written by Sylvester Stallone after he saw the Muhammad Ali-Chuck Wepner fight. The sequels were inspired by the success of the original.
