I know what it means and many others have given their take, but I did want to vent a little with what it is not supposed to mean - yet I'm finding more and more that it is becoming the case....
This season I have:
1. Been flipped off and laughed at when another car raced into a spot I had been waiting for while someone else backed out.
2. Nursed cuts on the back of my daughter's heels after a pushy shopper hit her with the cart because "she wasn't moving quickly enough" in Christmas Tree Shop.
3. Watch a man get pushed out of the way by a college student in a hurry. That man (mid-40's probably) then fell and dislocated his shoulder. The college student took off while the rest of us were helping the man get back up off the floor.
4. Read in the local paper that a man shot and killed another man over a Christmas present. Not kidding about this one either---http://www.wptz.com/news/10517718/detail.html
I'd love to think that Christmas was still about the Birth of Jesus and kindness, but I think every year brings me closer to the fact that the season has become about greed and who can put up the tackiest Christmas display.

The Christmas spirit is really how Christians should be all the time. Peace, Love, Happiness, Caring for your fellow man, all of those things are, or should be, daily occurrences in a Christian's life. On a less religious note, the Christmas spirit is simply a time to be with loved ones and reflect on life and all the good things that have happened to you. And don't forget the presents!!

I suppose it means different things to different people. My idea:
I think of it as a diving board from which I launch myself into the most refreshing pool of love and kindness I can imagine.
Have you ever passed a homeless person on the street and something just made you hand him a fiver all of a sudden without even thinking about it? Or did you ever stop to help a stranded motorist even though you knew that is not considered 'wise' in this day and age? Or did you ever find yourself volunteering to help with the school's fund raiser?
If you ever do any of these 'random acts of kindness' as Oprah calls them, then you are experiencing the Christmas Spirit......no matter the time of year.

The reason why we give gifts to each other and try to have generous hearts at Christmas is because God set the ultimate example by giving the gift of his son to us, to save all mankind. Are you a fan of Charlie Brown's Christmas Special? The words of Linus ring true, "Born unto you in the city of David is a Savior, who is Christ the Lord." And then all the kids suddenly understand the true spirit of the season.

The spirit of Christmas comes from the birth of our savior, Jesus. He was born in a manger by Mary and was the son of God that was born to die for our sins. On Christmas day we celebrate the his birthday. Try to forget about Santa and all of the presents, and try giving to others and spending the wonderful time of year with people you love. And remeber to be thankful for what you have.
Merry Christmas!

it means realizing what Christmas is really about...its not about santa or presents or snow...its about Jesus Christ and celebrating his birth. The Christmas spirit is the Spirit of Christ and following his will. He always wants you to be kind-hearted, which is why many people refer to it as the Christmas spirit. Don't you notice that everyone is nicer around the holidays? That's God's Christmas Spirit.

It means something different to everybody. Some people focus more on the Biblical Christmas stuff. Some people think it's totaly crap and that it's all become corporate and meaningless.
But I think it's about always having a time of year to look forward to being with and loving on my family. I'm not a big believer in religious things, but I like that we all take time out around this time time of year to be together and make as many memories as we can.

So many of these answers are right on. But I think that what you've seen is that it boils down to LOVE.
Whether you do or don't believe in Jesus Christ it's still God's love that sent him here. Love for mankind in a way that none of us can truly understand yet on Christmas we try and share with our friends and families and even random strangers.
The love increases in our hearts and minds as the lights and carols remind us of other Christmases and other times.
Sometimes, we're sad for losses or loneliness but if you reach out to someone at Christmas..? you bound to find a friend... or at the very least a friendly response. Yes there are rude and self involved ones out there too but by and large... most people are open and giving at this time of the year. Again, it's the LOVE of the season shining down on us all...
So, just open your heart to the love all around you, your family, your friends, even God... he did after all send his son for YOU... and guess what!!
His birthday is coming up!

Well, during Christmas time or anytime at that, it is better to give than recieve. That's what it means to me.The giving spirit of Christmas time comes from when Jesus was born, people from all over brought him presents because they heard from angels He was the Son of God. I do believe in God and I'm not hating on your beliefs, but just answering your question. It's not about the presents though it is about being with the ones you love.

To me, part of the Christmas Spirit is that good feeling you get when you willingly serve other people.
If you're up for it, you can volunteer your time to work in a food kitchen that serves hungry people. Notice the grateful looks in their faces and realize that you've just made the world a better place to live.
