I'm looking for a fancy restaurant in or near Santa Cruz. What I mean by fancy is that there should be a dress code. For example, some restaurants require that the man wears a suit jacket. I need a really nice place to eat.
Also, what are the names of some moderate-nice hotels in Santa Cruz?

Try Chaminade its in the hills overlooking Santa Cruz and whole Montery Bay. It is both a Hotel, and has 3 Restaurants on the property ranging from casual to elegant.

I am from Santa Cruz, keep in mind that it's a casual beach town. Some of the "best" hotels are the inn at pasatiempo, the coast hotel (831-426-4330) I used to work there. There are many great restaurants on the wharf and down town. You might want to try the visitors council to get more information. I love the Crow's Nest at the harbor. It's dressy, but no dress code. The views are great and food is wonderful. Also in Capitola, there is the shadowbrook, owned by the same owner as the Crow's Nest. That is also dressy, and most people do dress up. It's very good, and also has nice views too. There is a nice hotel in Capitola called the Inn at Depot Hill.
Hope this helps, it's a great place.

If you're willing to drive to the Monterey Peninsula, the Fishwife in Pacific Grove is fantastic. It's right off Asilomar beach -- great seafood. Also, there's Lugano's Swiss Bistro in Carmel, off Carmel Valley Road in this shopping centre. It's got wonderful fondue (great for cold winter nights!) and the other food is really comforting, if you like Swiss food.
These aren't that dress-up though.
Oh, and there's the Sardine Factory on Cannery Row. That's a really nice place and it's a bit of fancy-dress.
Santa Cruz? Not quite sure about Santa Cruz. It's really a laid-back town.

I agree that the Sardine Factory in Monterey is very nice and upscale. It's right on Cannery Row, that area looks so nice at Christmas time with all the lights right on the water. Afterward, go to the London Bridge Pub down towards Monterey Beach. Great, friendly pub (overlooking where all the boats are docked). Say hi to Rick, the bartender.

Shadowbrook is phenomenal. It is very quiet and cozy, but upscale is well. If you want to stay in Capitola (near Santa Cruz), try the Monarch Inn. It is located on a cliff over the beach with beautiful morning views.
Good luck!

Shadowbrook is said to be very nice, and the Brookdale Lodge is famous. I think I can find both to put a link in below. I know I have Brookdale Lodge's because that's just a mile down the road from my home in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
