Honesty is always the best policy. You are right, sometimes people do not react well when you tell them the turth.....the truth isn't always easy to hear. BUT, people respect those who take the risk of being honest. it's much harder to tell the truth sometimes than it is to tell a lie!
Good for you that you have embraced honesty, no matter what ramifications come along with it.
I took a vow of honesty several years ago, and while it has brought me some of the same headaches it has brought you.....the benifits far outweigh the negatives.

First of all, the original question was "Is Honesty a form of Denial". The answer to that is NO. Honesty is always good, even when it is not the "nicest" answer. To address your other statement as to how people lie to each other: I think a lot of people are habitual liars and quite frankly this society is full of sociopaths as well. Lying gets you what you want. Or gets you out of what you don't want. Lying placates people. Lying can win you favors. But being brutally honest is very rarely a trait that is rewarded in our society. Lying is easier. Most people are lazy, and think only of themselves, so why would they tell the truth? There is no prize for virtue in this society.

I don't for one minute believe in lying or being dishonest but I do believe in having enough consideration for another to first stop in order to "choose my words carefully". Its also not always necessary or productive to share our honest opinions. Before answering a question or volunteering an opinion, ask yourself:
-am I being truthful?
-will my answer or opionion help or hinder a situation?
-how important/worthwhile/important is it for others to know what I think about this situation?
-will I later regret sharing my feelings on this matter? Am I willing to stand behind what I am saying?
And of course, if nobody asks you, sometimes your honest opinion really is not welcome. :-) I've learned over the years to respect a very famous and wise saying, which I believe has been credited to Abraham Lincoln: "Tis better to remain silent and only perhaps thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt."
Just my two cents worth, since you actually asked ...

"Some people lie, just to get through the day..."
That's a quote from One Tree Hill, and it rings true. I suppose there is a time to lie and a time to tell the truth. Most do not want to hurt someone else's feelings, therefore hide the truth if they think it might cause more harm than good.

everyone lives in their own world, no matter how much they want to deny it, and many people's worlds are delusions, lies, and ignorance, honesty smashes this bubble, or at least puts cracks in it. that angers many people who hold onto their precious bubble, what you need to do is, well, selectively lie, because sometimes, honesty has its place and saving someone's feelings can be a good thing, for now. So my advice is, stay honest, but don't always blurt it out every time you can.

true happiness will come from honesty in the long run.
not brutal, hurting honesty (which may be what you're doing)
but true, authentic from-the-heart compassionate honesty.
when i was young i would say mean things then when confronted i would simply say "stating a fact, i'm just stating a fact" but i now know that i chose hurtful facts to state.
that wasn't honesty.
study hard about what real honesty means.

It is unfortunate but absolute and total honesty only gets you in trouble. People want you to be nice to them, and it costs nothing to temper the truth with a bit of sugar.

If lying brings friends, stay honest and do not lie. Who would want a lying friend? Who would want a lying spouse?

I believe that we all lie in some form or another, but this concept is not foreign to me. Stay true to yourself, and your true friends will become evident in the process. This may be one of life's hardest lessons to learn.
