From my IT experience I have not had any problems with either any of the Dell , Sony Vaio, or Toshiba laptops.

If you are looking for a light weight laptop, I would recommend the Sony Vaio. I would also recommend a dell for their 3 year warranty as per the others that have the standard 1 year warranty.

Ok, here's some questions that should help you decide what you want...

1) Is it for work or Home?

2) Would you be storing huge music & Photo Files?

3) Burn DVDs/CDs and transfer files on MP3?

4) Would you like your screen large or small?

5) Laptop Heavy or Light?

6) Are you planning on taking it with you where you go?

There are many good brand names out there, HP, Sony, Dell...I'd personally recommend sony and Hp since I've owned both.

When you decided to purchase an laptop, look for the key following things...

1) Harddrive size...ie (40G, 60G, 80G) The larger it is, the more it can store on your laptop

2) The speed (1GHz, 2GHZ same analogy as above)

3) Wireless Capability...If you have a wireless router at home, this is useful.

4) DVD/CD-R (Most laptops come with a CD-R, some with CD-RW/DVD-R capability, some with CD-R/DVD-RW capabilty, the choice is yours on whether you want to watch DVDs and burn them.

The rest of the cosmetic stuff is down to personal choice...hope this helps!

Generally speaking, HP is a good brand of computers. So is Compaq (which HP recently bought) and Dell. If you buy another HP, I doubt you'll have the same problem.

Well here's some advice:
DON'T buy a Dell laptop, all Dell products are pieces of crap.

Buy a Dell.
They will help you if you run into any problems.
