- Hi, I need some advice please. I would like to live and work in the US and teaching is the career i am currently training towards. I am on a PGCE 11-18 yr old ICT course in the UK, at a university and have worked for a year previously in a school as a learning assistant/librarian/IT manager. I have a degree in Business Studies, but am on an Information/communication/technology post graduatre teaching course, to augment my skills. - I become fully qualified as a teacher in a year or so, in the UK, so what do i need to do to teach business studies or Information/communication studies in the US? - I know that because of the federal system each state is different, so it is a bit confusing to me. - Are there any teachers out there or professionals who know about such things, or have made a similar move? - Is there a state or two in particular, where things might be simpler for me? Help! (: - Many Thanks.

You will need to determine which state and city you want to teach in. Have all paperwork in order. Then, contact the school districts' Human Resources departments and set up interviews. You can go online to see salary schedules. Let me give you one.... Klein Independent School District. It's a reputable school district here in Texas. You can get a sense of how the distrct is organized, maps, etc. Keep in mind that you will probably have to pass a certification exam for any district. Most districts hire during the summer months after all resignations and tranfers have been accounted for . Also, many conduct job fairs . There is a teacher shortage in the states, so I'm confident you won't have any trouble finding a job. And , BTW, Texas is a great state to live in. Good luck.

First you will need the American equivalent of at least a bachelors degree from an accredited university with a degrees in your major (which is appears you have) and secondary education that includes a course of student teaching under a professional. (It is not clear if you have all of that, but it sounds like you have some of it). The best way to find out what you need is to decide which state you would like to work in and contact their state department of public education. Many states will let you work on a one year probationary license if you have a degree but are missing several courses that they require for their state license . They allow you to work while you get these courses. Some of the courses would not be offered in the UK. An example: Texas requires all teachers to have a course in the history of Texas. They might hire you to work provided in your first year you took that course and passed it, at which time they would give you your regular license. Another route is to look at teaching colleges in the state that offer teacher certification courses for degreed professionals. They know the state requirements and make sure you meet them. I am almost certain you will need a few bridge courses but it doesnt mean that you will not be hired.

There is NOT a teacher shortage in all states. Some states have too many teachers and it is very difficult to get hired there. The states with gluts that I know of are Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania and Indiana. States with shortages are North Carolina, Florida, Virginia, Texas, Arizona, Nevada and California. It is easier to get a job in larger cities. Good luck!!
