Lately, it seems the celebrity culture and the way we follow them has gotten very extreme. With it's emphasis on image and style rather than character, and the way it drives youth to rather bizarre extremes in fashion and behavior. Is this good for our culture or bad?

Definitely negative. If you ask me, the whole concept of individuality is gradually depleting due to the undeniable influence of mass media (which, by the way, is the driving force of celebrity culture). What can I say...bombarded by a slew of celebrity gossip programs, racy radio broadcasts, and in my opinion, celebrity news stories that are far too unworthy to mention, society's youth has just fallen deeply into the celebrity culture and has confused many of the self-serving celebrity's we see everyday with actual role models.

It's bad for our culture. I think about a guy like Charles Kuralt, who wasn't the greatest looking guy in the world, but he was one of the best journalists and story tellers in the world. He wouldn't even be able to get a job in television today because he didn't have the right look - so we'd be robbed (as a society) of his magnificent talents these days if he was just starting out.

There's too much focus on physical appearance and not enough on character and substance. Why isn't Bill Gates more of a "celebrity" (i.e. why aren't they doing tv shows about his philanthropy and business acumen and such)? Because he's a "geek". People would rather see Paris Hilton. Why? She's dumber than a shovel (and not even that good looking)!

I agree with The Hand. But I will admit that, in the long run, I tend to take positive comments more to heart and ignore the negative ones.
