My mom and my step dad smoke. My mom smoked for a while after I was born but then stopped for about 4 years. Then my mom met Dave, (soon to be me step dad) and he smokes. So Dave got my mom smoking again. Both me and my soon to be step sista, Kristin, want to help them stop. Do you have any suggestions how?

talk to them about it, tell them how it makes you feel and how you don't want them hurting themselves, etc. if they were good parents they'd realize what they were doing is wrong, and want to stop for their kids.

I've had this problem with my best friend who has smoked ever since we were in high school and we are about 23 now, it's hard to get someone to stop once they are addicted and people have to want to stop on their own to want to use the help that is out there - even though she watched her step mother die of breast cancer from smoking, she hasn't stopped and is smoking the srongest ciggerettes that are out there.

Maybe tell them that they are harming you by second hand smoke?

Unfortunately, the biggest problem is if they do not WANT to quit -- then, there really is nothing you can do. I know -- I smoked for 20 years and no one could help me. I only finally quit when my 3-year-old niece began "smoking" candy cigarettes because she wanted to be just like her auntie!! THEN, I told her what a filthy, disgusting habit it was and she should never do it -- and she asked then why did I? Once I admitted to HER that I was hooked, I could finally quit -- for her and me. Today she is 23, I've been off for 20 years -- and she doesn't smoke either! Maybe some kind of shock treatment like that with your mom might work, too!

You can keep asking them both to stop, you can show them the overwhelming evidence that smoking causes major health concerns down the road. You can ask them to quit smoking for your birthday present (or Christmas present). But in the end, they will quit smoking because they want to.

Tell them you don't want to see them die that way.
My dad did and it is horrific. We all have to die but, what a way to go. If they are strong willed they'll stop and if they love you more then cigarettes, you'll find out. My uncle quit through hypnosis...

They have to want to stop...although you two can express your desire that they quit and why you want that, ultimately it's their decision and it's often not an easy thing to do (quit)...

Let them know how you feel...then leave it up to them...
