In 1823, an "ascending room" made its debut in London.

In 1853, Elisha Otis introduced the safety elevator, which prevented the fall of the cab if the cable broke.

On March 23, 1857 the first Otis elevator was installed at 488 Broadway in New York City.

The first electric elevator was built by Werner von Siemens in 1880. The safety and speed of electric elevators were significantly enhanced by Frank Sprague.

well i guess. I mean, elevators were used on the titanic and it sunk in 1912. So the odds of having elevators in New York in 1936 is pretty likely.

No! Long before our time, Africans discovered a way to lift things higher than they can reach. They did things their way because they didn't have the technology that we have today. In the early 1800's Americans went to Africa and saw their culture and their way of living. The Americans thought that the Africans way of culture was interesting and they brought that experience back to America where they duplicated that invention. Then Americans put it to their use and stated that America discovered the elevator.
