The Western Ghats lie along the edge of the Deccan Plateau --an area underlain by a huge volcanic province called the Deccan Traps. These flat-lying basalt lava flows are locally as thick as 6500 ft and cover an area of almost 200,000 square miles in west-central India. The Deccan Traps are flood basalts that erupted about 60-65 million years ago. The extent of the eruption is so significant that some have linked them to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Several models have been proposed to explain the origin of these massive deposits: mantle plume (hotspot), rifting, or impact.
Some of the rocks of Kerala are much older--Archean , and mostly metamorphic.
