The rule of thumb was a law in the early New England states stating that it was illegal to hit your wife with any stick larger in diameter than your thumb. Seems like things could be put back in order pretty quick that way to me.

The rule of thumb actually is from the beer brewing industry in the early days.The brewmast would put his thumb in the beer vat to check the temperature.If you want to hit your wife to feel big,go ahead.
