If you look at the wikipedia entries for Gandhi (October 2, 1869 – January 30, 1948)and the British Raj (the British Empire's rule of India from 1858 to 1947), you'll see that his life-span matched the British rule in India pretty closely. He was about 11 years old when the British arrived and only lived about 1 year after they left.

He hardly knew a time when India didn't live under colonial oppression.

The wikipedia entry for Gandhi says he first used his technique of passive resistance in South Africa.

Wikipedia says his religious beliefs gave rise to the non-violence idea - "Gandhi remained committed to non-violence and truth even in the most extreme situations. Gandhi was a student of Hindu philosophy and lived simply, organizing an ashram that was self-sufficient in its needs. He made his own clothes and lived on a simple vegetarian diet. He used rigorous fasts for self-purification as well as a means of protest."

He lived through a time including 2 world wars, which may also have some bearing on his desire for non-violence.

The wikipedia article covers "Civil Rights Movement in South Africa (1893—1914)", which says that his first-hand experience of racism as a lawyer in South Africa gave rise to a lot of his views.

On his return to India, he would be even more aware of the racism inherrent in the British Empire, with the white britiish army at the top, a white british civil service, an indian civil service, Indian local rulers (Maharjas) running areas on behalf of the british and also the Indian caste system determining people's place in society from birth.

You might find renting the movie 'Gandhi' a good idea, if you have time.

One angle you might explore for your paper is how transport and communications improved during his lifetime from 1869 to 1948 (telegraph, telephone, radio, cinema news-reels, newspapers, trains, automobiles).

He was able to manipulate the media. He staged a march to the sea in India to delibretly violate a stupid british law against making sea-salt. His actions and the march by thousands of people was reported far and wide across India, leading to a mass-movement. You could call him the first of the great spin-doctors.

In this way, he was able to build up an un-stoppable mass-independence movement against the British, in a way that would have been impossible before mass-media.

No Peace ... relatively the Mahatma's morals are quite totally above tiniest reproach and todays guy lacks the integrity and braveness to stick to them .He replaced into unfinchingly righteous and moralistic. lots that he might inspire people to undergo even undesirable actual torture with severe persistence and total ahimsa. It takes someone made up of iron to have faith and stick to such in todays international. Mahatma Gandhi did that which he preached in spite of each and every thing and till finally this date he's abused via his own countrymen yet few others might have the affection for morality, reality and the braveness So he's noted as mahatma meaning super soul and it takes a super soul to stick to all tht philosophy and massive souls are uncommon Its available for an the two rigteous person- so its available at somebody point yet no longer in any incorrect way- i mean no longer on a much bigger scale.Todays international is far too crammed with decadence 4 that
