I second the Runescape suggestion. It has both member and free versions, but there's plenty to do on the free version. It's also the largest and most popular browser-based MMORPG game there is, if I'm not mistaken. Browser-based as in there's no download required to play. The free version has lots of different "outfits" ranging from six different sets of armor, to random event clothing (mime, camouflage, forester, etc) as well as wizard robes, archer garments, etc. It also has quests, monsters to kill, and a quite large set of skills other than combat to raise (cooking, mining, smithing, fishing, etc.)
Everything I've mentioned is accessible in the free version.

My sister plays Millsberry.com all the time. You get to buy clothes,food,go fishing, go to the library, build your own house and more. You earn money buy playing games. It should keep your son entertained 4 hours!!
