In the past, I've just plugged it into the system, and it works fine and all, but I was wondering if there was a more proper method?

Shut down and Open your PC Tower.

Plug it in to the same IDE cable as the other Rom drive.

You will have a flat thing that looks like duct tape, that is the IDE cable.

It has a rectangular piece of plastic on it, that is the IDE plug.

Put the end of that plug with the red mark on it towards the power plug.

You can use any power plug. (P1, P2, P3, etc) to supply power to the drive.

You also need to activate it in the bios. Press F2 (on most PCs) during boot up, that will take you to the BIOS, the settings for the bios can differ from PC to PC, but most of the time you can find it under the list of drives.

Make sure it is set to Automatic.

hey look at the motherboard when you open up your computers base unit...

there should be a grey wire plugged into your first DVD drive, and there should be another slot on the same wire for the second one

best thing, put the second one right under the first one, connect the data cable as described above, then the power cable, then boot up and ur good to go!! this way both your dvd drives are inside your base unit..

this is the fastest result. with usb, your speeds will be lowered, and e.g. if you want to watch a DVD on it you might get frames being skipped sometimes...

If you are adding a burner and both your hard drive and existing CD/DVD drive are on the same cable, just add the new drive to the new IDE channel. You will find it on the motherboard, typically next to the one already in use.

I always try to keep the burner and the reader on two separate channels. And if you're using SATA controllers and drives, I'm not sure, but I don't think it matters as the transfer speeds are incredibly fast and reliable.

If your going to install a second drive put it on the same ribbon your other drive is using. There are usually another slot to plug it in this prevents more ribbons being installed. You also have to set the drive to Slave for it to work properly. Usually has a black pin and a diagram to put it in the right place.
