I this this person is actually asking more specifically about what would happen if an epidemic were to occur.
Well the answer to your question, is yes.
If an outbreak were to occur that we were not immune to yet, you could expect a very large number of our population to die very quickly.
Read up on the bubonic plague and how many people it killed. The same thing with the flu.
The CDC works constantly to catch mosquitos in far off jungles to get ahold of these variant strains of viruses such as flu and TB, etc that would wreak HAVOC on our society if they made it here. They take these mosquitos, create vaccines for the local villages where these mosquitos are present and it becomes difficult for it to spread. It also helps that the people who are most likely to carry these super variant viruses will never be able to travel to such places because of wealth or transportation, laws, politics, war and turmoil etc.
Chances are you wont find a pure amazonian native indian in LA any time soon carrying a super virus.
The slim chance it does occurr, we'd all be pretty screwed.
Heres a little secret - i participated in a government vaccination program for small pox. The US has not vaccinated its children from small pox since 1983. The virus has thought to been extinct, except in certain locations such as the soviet union in labs and a few places in the US. Some of them unaccounted for, potentially sold on the black market to warring and agressive nations - these vials of the virus can be replicated in mass biological attacks, and therefor the vaccinations will be available to the general public in the next few years (the military gets it first.)
They are genuinely worried about massive outbreaks and are taking steps to make sure iraq or north korea dont load up a biological warhead and send it our way.

Psalm 91:5,6,7
"Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the pestilence that walks in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasts at noonday.
A thousand shall fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not come near you."
Jesus is a refuge and a fortress. The "black plaque" destroyed many, but not all. I trust in the Lord.

If you are worried about little things like this you need to just go into your hole and hide so the rest of us can get on with life

If there is an outbreak on that scale, do you really believe there would be rape squads?

pffft, quarantining will help, plus it's a flu virus, thus meaning it can be resisted, not like it sticks to your skin and blows up like C4.
