Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts. Gets down to the nitty gritty of a heroin addict and convicted armed robber who escapes to India and experiences life in the raw in the Mumbai (Bombay) underworld. Fantastic. Currently reading The Black Book by Orhan Pamuk (Turkey) - not new, but it's a new translation.

The Broken Cedar by Martin Malone - worth searching out - I can't find it in bookshops any more, but it's brilliant. Don't bother reading it if you're depressed!
If you just want something gripping, anything by Harlen Coben is just about unputdownable.

I don't read many books - apart from text books for Uni. I really enjoyed Starter for Ten and I would love to see the film sometime.
