Basically search engines are the big megasystems that drive the internet. Search Engines locate and list web sites based on their popularity on the web. There are a number of techniques that one can use to make a website "rise" and be noticed on the big search engines. Also to make them show up higher in the search listings (i.e. show up on the first page instead of the middle or last page listing). This is called "search engine optimization". This can be a very complicated process, and is an art as much as a science. try goin to Yahoo or google search page and type in "search engine optimization" on the search bar, and press enter. You will find some wonderful examples, and some sources to get help doing this.
