I need to write a 500 word essay on why I should be accepted into my school's honoros program, but I don't know what to say other than I'm smart, a hard worker and dedicated to my studies. Any tips or ideas on what else I need to say???

Talk about your future goals - major and career; mention if you want to go for a higher degree after graduation. You could also mention any clubs you joined in high school, especially if you were an officer.

Like the other submitter said, talk about your goals and aspirations for the future. Talk about past achievements (i.e. AP courses, IB courses, Honors Courses, scholarships). If you have done well in school while working, taking care of siblings or parents, have overcome some sort of adversity (i.e. injury, cancer, learning disorder), those are all super sellers. They are looking for well rounded students, so if you have some involvement in your church or service organization outside of school, that is a great thing to talk about too.

I think that to be accepted into to Honors College, the panel grade you on how well you do at your studies verses your extra activities like your clubs, etc., and other involvement at the university. It's just not GPA standing.

Be very specific of your grade point average, use examples of leadership and ambition (goals) and express enthusiasm for the program.
