You need to start speed training. Running wind sprints will improve your staminia and endurance. Add inclined running to your work out routine. Running as fast as you can uphill will increase your mile speed significantly. In about 2-3 months you should be around 5:00. Good luck and keep training hard.

You ran 7:19, that's great for a beginner. Honestly, 6:30 is a real stretch for only running on Friday's. That time will get you a spot on the track distance team. My advise is this: try to run a consistent pace. In the end, if you have anything left, really pick it up for the last 200meters or so. If you could run like a crazy person, that means you could have kept a faster pace in the first part of the race. You really don't want to be able to run super fast in the end. You want most of your work to be done in the first 1400 meters of the race. The more you run, the more you'll understand this.

You definitely need to eat at least an hour before you run. Give yourself enough time to digest so you don't feel sick/ cramp up while running. Pace yourself obviously. Maybe even carry a timer or watch and make a goal time for each lap. Most of exercise is mental so as long as you can forget how tired/ sore you are you should be able to push yourself enough to get a better time. Personally I think 5 minutes: however many seconds, is already a very fast mile time. Maybe not for the Olympics but you're definitely faster than average.

As a former mile runner myself, Carbs are usually good for energy. The thing with that is that you have to eat long before you run otherwise they'll slow you down. If you're running in the morning, have a big pasta dinner the night before. If you're running in the afternoon or at night, have two or three bagels for breakfast that day.

Interval Training. Making e.g. 100 yard dashes at full speed then recovering by walking 100-300 metres and repeating the cylcle several times. Reduce the recovery distance and slightly increase the running distance eg to 150 yards etc with time to boost your output.
Jumping Squats perhaps? Not sure.

In addition to the carb advice, which is very good advice by the way, also try eating a candy bar about 45 min before the race for the sugar boost. It may not sound healthy, but it works.

have a raw egg lol jk, it actually helps but most people prefer not to, but just think about working out big before you run, and when you're running breathe through your nose, and just keep telling yourself, just a little more just a little more. I used to never run miles, but when I tried this I ran two miles without stopping! Now I'm in cross country =)
