Does lighting a match really make the smell from a poot go away?

Yep. Mother taught us when we were young. Something about the flame burns up the gas and gets rid of the smell. Can remember the science to it.

No. All it does is mask the smell with another odor, the smoke from a burning match. Candles don't work, either. Also, neither works to cover or disguise the smell of cigarette smoke.

I think the idea was that, since a fart produces methane, a flame would burn the methane away. By the time you get a match out and lit, the methane has dispersed enough that a match won't do any good. And it's not the methane that you smell any way, it's all the organic gases produced in your gut that smell. And these have dispersed also, so that even if these gases do burn on contact with a flame, the match would burn out long before you could wave it around enough to get to all the gas.
