A few years back they pretty much said that they are done accepting christmas gifts becasue they have everything so to put whatever money was going to be spent on them to a charity. I am going to their house and i would like to give them something, so far i have a calender of their dogs which is kind of tacky. ANy suggestions?

Don't worry about being tacky with an 85-year old grandparent. Just think from the heart. They will probably love the calandar! Maybe you should bake them something.

Make them something! Homemade gifts are better than any store bought gifts. Anyone can appreciate them! Even your grandparents! Another thing you can do is just tell them that you needed to get them a gift and smile and give them a hug!

Hope I helped! Have a very Merry Christmas!

Why don't you give them a new "experience" - something they have not done before. Like a tour of a local attraction or winery, a drive in a limosine, going up in a hot air balloon, a special dinner at a restaurant with violin playing especially for them, waltz lessons, a personal fitness trainer who specializes in seniors, concert tickets for their favorite opera or show or ballet, the chance to pose for a portrait painting, a personal chef for an evening (to make their favorites), a massage, a day at the spa, have your family perform a special play or concert just for them, or create a video of family memories.

I usually get my grandmother a gift card from Barnes&Noble. We make a day out of it, where I will take her to lunch and then take her to pick out whatever book she wants. However, in your case, I would suggest respecting their wishes and making a donation, in their name to a deserving charity. Most charities will give you some sort of card or something that you can send to the person showing that a donation was made in their name.

Get as many kids/grand kids as possible to submit a special memory. Like, "Every spring, Grandma would let me help in the garden. I still love gardening to this day because she took the time to share that with me."
A submission, small or large, from all the kids/grand kids is a wonderful way to make them feel loved. Gather all the memories in a keepsake - as simple as putting them all in a large envelope or as lavish as creating a scrapbook. Its best to make sure its something that could be added on to with a new favorite memory each year.

This may sound hokey...but, my grandma is 90 years old. She is fragile, her body. I buy her soft hankies (the real kind with embroidery on them), incredibly soft and loose fitting socks, soft and warm chair blankets...those sorts of things. Those are the things she uses most often and I like to feel I am close to her that way. When you get older, those of the 'things' that bring the most comfort I guess. But, I bring those things to her and stay with her for awhile. I let her tell me stories of when she was younger, and listen to her. I play dominoes with her, and let her show me off to her friends. I make her a cup of hot chocolate, and rub her shoulders a little bit. Companionship and touch...are the biggest things I think that elders need.

Bring some photos of your immediate family, or search some photos when you are kids with your grandparent. Any way, try to find something which can remind your grandparent of young time. Merry Christmas and happy new year!

I would make a donation to charity organization in their name. If there is a cause that is dear to them (such as cancer or something along those lines) then a donation in their name might mean more than a mere trinket. If they've lost someone close...like a spouse or cancer, the donation is very touching.

Definitely do what they ask & donate to a charity in their names- it's nice that they're generous to want that. But if you also insist on getting something additional- try a dinner gift certificate, or even better, make them something, whether it be cookies or arts/crafts.

Older people enjoy going out . How about a gift certificate to a nice restaurant in their area where they can enjoy a nice meal together.
