My husband and I have a contracting business. We did a job for our friend that is getting married, did the kitchen they loved it, for about 1/3 of what it should have cost, got them high end cabinets at cost. The Father saw the work, hired us to give his son and our friend a master suite. We've been working on it for 4 long months as our sole job. We got 1/2 up front. 1/2 to be paid at the end. Just this week we were told full payment would come today NOW he is squabbling over prices. The estimate stated estimate, we didn't even charge for extra work that was added. This whole time he said no problem with cost we are 5000 under budget. Now he is holding the money hostage, unless we agree to take a 2000 cut from amount due he won't pay us in a timely manor. It will take months for legal action, with xmas here he has us over a barrel. I feel she betrayed us, she told him we can't go home for xmas without our $$$, that is how he KNEW to do this. She is saying don't let it effect 'us'

He is a wealthy big wig with Moss Adams. So she is kissing his @ss.

Next time their water heater breaks in the middle of the night they better not call us!

The job is finished which is why final payment was to come today.
It is in writing. Legal action can be taken but it just sucks because it will NOT be done anytime soon.

I work for a general contractor....in this case...I think he would probably leave without finishing the job....he does work for friends and family...but does not really do "favors" and give people things at a lesser rate....and they don't expect him to.....it's your job...your income....and your friends...(that really aren't your friends at all)...are taking advantage of your kindness.....if you have a signed agreement....I would probably take the time it needs to go to court...Hard lesson learned....but I would not let them take advantage of you!

One suggestion my be.. you said you didn't charge for the extra work you've done....you should...go ahead and take the discount he's askin for.....then send him an invoice for "extra work per request.....line item it out....then take that invoice through the legal process.....there's more than one way to skin a cat!!

in this situation is difficult to forgive and forget. some people behave like that and will be rewarded justly in time.

have a contract for all clients- family and friends. legal action sucks.
never work for family, and never work for friends.

Forgive as the Lord forgives..the Bible says:

Colossians 3:13
Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

This may be an experience in your life where you learn and move on.

Gosh, that sounds like it sucks big time :-( Sorry to say though, it sounds like the only thing you can do is take legal action. Some people are just that way no matter what you do for them.

It just shows that you can't always trust so-called friends.
