You are correct, bands in the 80s wanted to get a video on MTV because they wanted to get noticed! Growing up I hardly heard songs like "Shout at the Devil" on the radio, unless it was requested. Song wasn't in the radio stations normal lineup.

I will also admit if I look at those videos now I am like "I enjoyed that video back then? what was I thinking??" lol. I guess they had nothing to go by and made best that they could at the time. But thankfully now they know better!

Music video was a new thing back then. Production values were lacking in many of them. Digital imagery was of course not at the level that it is today, so special effects may look a bit hokey. But the bigger factor was that the music videos were largely viewed as an afterthought.

In the '90s up until now, I think the visual aspect became the primary thing, and the music took a back seat. Tons of crap music out there made by people more concerned about looking cool or sexy/sleazy or menacing or whatever. Hopefully the emphasis will turn back to quality music again at some point soon. First order of business would be to give no more moronic rappers a recording contract. And give all the emo kids large doses of Prozac and tell them to grow up and stop whining about themselves. Then tell all the sleazebag women like Britney, Christina, Shakira, and Paris that they can't sing worth a nickel and to put on some proper clothes (and undies for God's sake) and go away.

This is SOOOOO true!!! And no one could put out a more gay video it seemed than Billy Squier. I still liked his songs just the same. However, regardless of how the videos looked, at least MTV played videos in the 80's. Can't say that much for them now!

That is true, but in the 80's it was about the music. The music video was in it infantcy. If it wasn't for those "gayest" music video's we would not have the "slightly"less gay ones that mtv rarely shows.

80's were the transition period to the musical expiriments / sounds we hear today... Many fashions and sound are immitated today, just with a lot more taste....

All the electronic sounds really came into full gear in the 80's and one thing that I can say is it was probably the most fashion disastrous era of all times.....

The music videos are just plain funny now but hey, they were cool back then....

I was clubbing during the 80s. Saw a lot of metal bands. And yes, the videos seem cheesy now. Not so much then though.

I couldn't finish the video you provided. Was too gay.

yes, but that is what makes it all the better! Unlike the crap music videos that cost a ton w/ all the bling and hookers that are out today

OMG, they were so young! Vince Neil is Skinny! Thanks for that one, I haven't seen it in ages. Yeah, they are corny, and the band probably hangs their head in shame when they see them now... but they were fun.
