I think part of looking at the 'plus points' is deciding why your interested in the field in the first place. Like any science, genetic engineering has amazing promise and woeful potential if misused. You may find that in addition to the general career choice, you will need to select an area of emphasis to apply your talents in.
It is a cutting edge, 'new' science that will have applications across all facets of human existence. From development of new food sources, to medical science breakthroughs all the way to potential terraforming applications on Mars - the sky is literally, the limit.
Being early into the field gives you the potential of being a ground breaking scientist with the potential to impact humanity in ways we can't even think of yet. If you can handle the science, math and politics - the only limits are the ones you set for yourself.
But, along with these potentials comes a responsibility to see that this science is used for the good of mankind. Be sure when you look at this career, you carefully examine the ethics of it and make sure it's something that will suit you.

Envy you! I would think the medical aspects of genetic engineering would be enough to entice you but when you look at genetics you can also look at robotics. What a great and vast career that would be, not to mention the financial rewards.

Getting an undergraduate degree in Genetics can allow you to work in many different areas including:
*Criminology
*Law Enforcement
*Drug development
Many times people will use that knowledge and go on to practice human medicine after getting their M.D. or practicing veterinary medicine after earning their DVM degree.

Plus: you can outfit your children with designer genes.
It pays a lot, it has a very long term future, the possibilities for advancement are probably excellent if you are good at it. Go for it - see you in the lab.
