Dennis Weaver played Matt Dillon's deputy Chester in CBS's long-running show Gunsmoke. It's not common that a replacement does a better job but Ken Curtis was excellent as Festus, the deputy replacement for Chester. Each of them was so good and had such depth to their characters it's hard to say which was better but I liked Festus, particularly for his antics with Doc played by Milburn Stone.
I like the episode where Festus got the pleasure of rescuing Doc by applying country medicine when Doc gets bitten by a rattler.

The show was Gunsmoke. The show starred James Arness as mashal Matt Dillion, and originally Dennis Weaver ,as deputy Chester Goode. At some point , the deputy's job became that of Festus, played by Ken Curtis.

Like everyone else said, Gunsmoke. But, did you know that he was in a number of really great movies...John Wayne's 'The Searchers' for example...and started out in very early Roy Rogers movies as part of The Sons of the Pioneers...he had a pretty good signing voice.
