A bipolar junction transistor (BJT) is a type of transistor. It is a three-terminal device constructed of doped semiconductor material and may be used in amplifying or switching applications. Bipolar transistors are so named because their operation involves both electrons and holes.
BJT can be used to amplify signals.
The original unijunction transistor, or UJT, is a simple device that is essentially a bar of N type semiconductor material into which P type material has been diffused somewhere along its length. The 2N2646 is an example of such a device.
UJT cannot be used to amplify signals. UJT's are used as relaxation ocsillator, for operating SCR's(Silicon Controlled Reectifiers) etc

Som is on the right track.
I would like to add a few things. Most important structurally and application both devices differ dramatically (see references).
The Bipolar Junction transistor is composed of either a thin P (or N ) layer sandwiched between two N-layer(or P - layers) forming a NPN (or a PNP) transistor which is capable of using its thin layer as a control 'point' called base. The BJT can switch and amplify signal.
The Unipolar Junction Transistor has only one junction (dah :-) ) It CAN NOT amplify signal.
Also Bipolar has two poles PN and NP (or NP and PN)
The Unipolar has only one PN (or NP)

BJT TRANSISTOR is called as bipolar because here conduction takes place due to both the type of charge carriers
ie holes and electrons.it is of two types pnp and npn based on majority carriers
in UJT conduction is due to any one of majority carriers ie either
holes or electrons.

UJT (UniJunction Transistor): It is a transistor with only one junction and three terminals: an emitter (E) and two bases (B1 and B2).
BJT (Bipolar Junction Transistor): This type of transistor consists of two junctions and three terminals, namely Emitter "E", Base "B" and Collector"C". There are two types of BJT, i) PNP and ii) NPN.
