how can we explain the fact that the positions of chef are taken usually by men, especially in five stars

The best paid positions are usually occupied by males. When women enter the field, it is usually because they are very good at it, or the males are moving into another field. Actually, even when women do the same job as men, they are usually paid less than men.

Because women are "cooks" and provide nurishment to the family (a traditional view). But to be excellent at something in a patriachal society you should be a man. Women are not seen as successful in general so men take up this position. Top chefs, top hairdressers, top fashion designers...all men.

Where a woman is noted for her skills she is still seen as a "cook" In the UK we have Delia Smith, a very respected cook, writer of fabulous cook books, but the image is of a homely, "women can do this in the home" type. Gordon Ramsey is far form homely. It's all about being macho, otherwise the food is somehow inferior.

Those are just perceptions, but they do play a role in determining who is seen as "the best".

Those are my views. But there are obviously a thousand less "feminist" reasons that are equally valid. But none the less a sad truth.

Give a man a gas powered out door grill and he will spend all summer cooking dinner.
As for the kitchen, I think it is like taking a car to a self service car wash.
For me and my wife, it comes down to this. Cleaning the car at a self service car wash is a job for my wife and a fun diversion for me.
I think for many women, it is fun to cook for a women and a dull job for a man around the house that is a drag.
The reason why there are so many men that are professional chefs is that they need a job to be a provider for their family. The better the restaurant the better the pay and the more that they can earn.
As superficial as it seems, the better the income a man has, the more attractive he is to women.

No one ever said that cooking is a woman's job. The head chef at the white is a woman. Her name is Cristeta Comerford, 42, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in the Philippines. Out of hundreds of applications she was chosen.

Probably because being a chef in a better restaurant is not only being an amazing cook, but managing the other chefs working in the kitchen. The restaurant is probably owned by a man, and doesn't consider a woman competent enough to be in charge of others. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a glass ceiling in the restaurant business, just as there is in all other sectors of employment.

I think there used to be more women chefs...but when feminism reared its ugly head, many women saught to distance themselves from anything that might associate them with the role of a housewife. I think men and women are equally good at cooking...BUT...women are better at multitasking, and so find it easier to cook an entire meal simultaneously. Have you noticed that most "master chefs" cook one thing at a time?

Cooking has only been a womans job in poor families. If you look back in history, most women did not do the cooking at all, nor did they have to take care of their own children either.

You have to be pretty strong to move fast and carry those heavy pots full of food at the same time and there you are. Working in a five star restaurant is pretty strenuous - a man is more suited - especially in the kitchen

Because any job that is in any way affluent man must take to make sure that he is better then woman. When all women know that a man is nothing without a good woman leading the way.

women are pretty good cooks in the household, but when it comes to cooking specialties, men are much better because they have a better understanding of everything than women do. they tend to be much more focused on what they are doing. the same as everything else in life. women are generally just dependent upon men for the finer things in life.
