Some people wouldn't know gratitude if they were to fall over it! I can imagine what a great effort it was for you and appreciate how thoughtful you were! I guess your friend is not worth the efforts and should feel relieved that you put holy in his bed. Was i you ... next year ... I'd forget the holy! I'd go for reindeer poop!

Maybe he's allergic or doesn't like the holidays. Maybe he's not Christian and doesn't celebrate Christmas. Does he like the holiday season in general? Maybe he's just grumpy today and got up on the wrong side of the bed.

The holly implies "kissin". Though a friend, maybe kissin is not what your friend has in mind when with you. Sorry if this isn't what you want to hear :( .......or maybe he just doesn't like plants in his bed :)

Well, there could be several reasons:
allergic to holly
or maybe he doesn't celebrate Christmas
and not to hurt your feelings but he might have been disappointed that all he got was holly.
