He was a philosopher in Ancient Greece. He was Plato's student, and Plato had been Socrates' student. Aristotle was the tutor of Philip of Macedonia's son - that is, of Alexander the Great.

Aristotle wrote on a great many subjects, from natural philosophy (sort-of science) to drama and politics. His ideas shaped and constrained the thinking of Europeans for a thousand years.

The Catholic Church in the Middle Ages adopted his cosmology (earth at center, unmoving, for starters) and other aspects of his thinking.
