If a "semi"-healthy male who DOES NOT work out or go at the gym decides to take Creatine and other whey supplements (usually associated with buildy building and mass/muscle growth), what can be the side effects?

Is taking Creatine and other similar supplements dangerous for a male who doesn't work out?

since it is not regulated by the fda there are no studies on the effects. i know you retain water and when i took it my kidneys hurt if you don't give yourself a break from it

Creatine phosphate is actually produced and stored by the kidneys and liver. So.... If the body is receiving an external supply of creatine, it will automatically shut down all production. This will create a condition, chemical dependency, making creatine a DRUG. Anyway, you'll be dependent on it. Later down the line, you'll experience kidney and liver damage. Why? Because the by-product of creatine, creatinine, is similar to uric acid, it is a toxin. When too much builds up, it puts stress on these two organs. A lot of people breakout with pimples and get diarrhea, due to the body's inability to filter so much toxin. Creatine is another fad, and all of these "studies", which are actually sponsored by companies, can be doctored to show the "results" that become when supplementing. IT'S ALL IN YOUR HEAD, PURELY PSYCHOLOGICAL. Just eat adequate protein, carbs, and fats, and you'll grow just fine. And another thing about creatinine's similarities to uric acid, it could possibly cause gout, a form of arthritis that's characterized by crystallized uric acid in the joints, causing sharp pains.

There are many myths surrounding supplementation, and I can tell you first hand that they are almost all 'myths', mostly negative ones. If you do not work out or exercise then supplementation is a waste of time and money. Creatine has several effects, most importantly it increases something in your body called ATP (adenosine triphosphate) which is basically your body's production of energy. If you do not work out or exercise then you have no need for this increase in energy, unless you are abnormally lethargic whereby creatine is not the solution to your problems. It causes your cells to absorb and use water at a much higher rate than normal, which can cause dehydration if the individual taking creatine does not increase their daily water intake substantially. Prolonged use can cause stress to kidneys, as well as hormone imbalance, therefore creatine is cycled and used for short periods of time, followed by a break allowing the body to flush it out of the system before the next cycle. If taken correctly it can be very beneficial. Supplements such as whey protein are only necessary to increase protein intake in a person's diet that requires high levels of protein. Even then it is only recommended if that individual cannot acquire the protein from food. For a person who does not exercise or require a high protein diet, taking whey protein will only result in gaining excess body fat. Basically supplementation for someone who does not work our or exercise is pointless. In regards to dangerous, if you were taking enormous amounts of a supplement, and not following the recommended dosage, for example taking too much creatine, not enough water and for prolonged period of time, way in excess of that recommended then yes it could be dangerous, but highly unlikely. Whey protein being dangerous is like food being dangerous.... you would have to consume an awful lot! I hope this helps.

Creatine is safe as long as you flush it out, drink a lot of water because it will harden in your liver if you dont flush it out...there are no side effects. At least there were none when I took it.

In high school I was not the strongest or fastest kid. When I graduated I started to take creatine and started to lift weights.. I did not get beg results as far as gains.. but I really did feel stronger than usual.

From what I've read and personal experience, the side effects from Creatine seem to be minimal, but it is a good idea to cycle it, one month on/ one month off, just to be safe.

Since its function is as an aid in muscle rebuilding from exercise, I see no particular reason to use Creatine if you're not working out.

Whey protein is good for you, but again, if you're not exercising you probably get enough protein from your diet. In fact, if you're not exercising, just focus on a healthy diet (low fat/ lean meat/ fresh vegetables) and you'll be doing all that you need from a dietary point of view; although you should consider an exercise program --- then you'd have a very good reason for the supplements, and be doing yourself a big favor in the long run.
