I looked in the trunk, thinking there would be access panels on either side, but I do not see a way to get into the bulb!

Look in the owners manual for Taillight replacement.

Also here is what I found in the shop manual.

Toward the bottom rear of the light assembly, on the outside, is a screw. (Most likely a torx, 6 pointed screwhead)
Remove this screw then pull lightly out on the lens assembly and back towards rear of vehicle.
The light socket is then accesible but twisting and removing from lens.
Replace bulb and reverse procedure.

Unscrew the light panel & pull out the bulb to change; then screw the cover back on.
