It depends what you can afford and what you enjoy.

If you like the outdoors, and seeing natural beauty, I recommend Utah, as Utah has several beautiful National Parks - Mt. Zion, Bryce, Cedar Breaks and the Grand Arches, to name a few.

If you like museums, then New York City is it, but I recommend that you get a hotel outside of the city, as it is cheaper, and then take a bus or train into the city to avoid driving.

If you like the night-life, gambling, eating and shopping, then Las Vegas has it all.

If you prefer quiet, solitude and reflection, Sedona, Arizona is very beautiful.

If you enjoy history, Pennsylvania is wonderful as it offers several historic places from the Civil War and Revolutionary War, plus the Amish and Mennonite communities are quaint and beautiful.

Vermont is gorgeous, with Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream!

Every state in our great country has something worthwhile to see, it just depends on your budget and your interests.

You can email states online and ask for travel suggestions and they send you pamphlets and brochures for free!

If you are into New England, Newport, RI is a nice place. It has that 18th century feel to it in the downtown part. You have TONS of mansions from the Gilded Age (late 1800's). There are beaches, boats and for those into gambling, a casino (although you'd have a better chance of winning at the Connecticut casinos not too far away).

San Diego is one of the best places to go on vacation. The weather is mild all year and there are lots of things to do....especially outdoor activities (water sports, hiking, kayaking, golf) but there is also theater, concerts, professional sports, great restaurants, the Zoo. and wine tasting. Well I haven't been EVERYWHERE so I don't know for sure the BEST, but Santa Fe, New Mexico is really awesome and the skiing should be great this time of year. I guess I'm a little more partial to Miami and Key West though.

Las Vegas. There is no other place more fitting to the american spirit with as much variety, legend, myth and fun all in the same package. And you can have fun for all ages for days on end without having to hit one casino, really.

The United States is really like several different countries in one that all speak (marginally) the same dialect of English.

I would recommend renting a car and doing a bit of driving, as that is one the the grand things and terrible things about America.

One trip that I've done that I can recommend.

Fly into Los Angeles International (LAX) from wherever you are coming from.

Spend a night or two there, then drive to San Diego, which is about two hours by car south.

Drive north to the LA/Orange County area and see some disneyland type stuff for a day or two.

Drive north through Santa Barbara, then through Solvang, which is this Awesome little dutch down.

Drive North along Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) to Big Sur. Spend a day or two hiking and camping. This place is awesome!!!

Drive North to Santa Cruz. Spend a night or go through. It is a nice town.

Drive North to San Francisco. Spend a few days. You can easily make it to different areas of the Bay Area using the local rail transportation like BART (http://www.bart.gov), caltrain and others. While you are San Francisco, it is worth going on a ferry to Sausalito across the bay, or just drive there. Alcatraz is very touristy, but worth the trip. Angel Island is wonderful as well.

If you like Wine, head up to Napa and Sonoma. Lost of spa treatments and bed and breakfast type of places.

Then head back to San Francisco, the to the Airport (SFO) to go home.

Here is the trip in Yahoo maps format., Enjoy!!!
