As a smoker, I love hearing talk like this. I really love seeing supposedly normal people get all hysterical about it. It amuses me to see the people of the state of Cali-fornication banning smoking just about everywhere in the state like the good little fascist sheep they are. I think to myself, go ahead, ban smoking...and have fun paying all those taxes that ONLY we smokers pay now. The taxes on a single pack of cigarettes is anywhere from 45% to 75% of the cost..you non-smokers don't have to pay this. I love the dis-information campaign aimed at second hand smoke, all the lies and the total ignorance of studies done by the World Health Organization that proved that second hand smoke was basically harmless. I loved the extortion racket that the Clintonista regime perpetrated on "Big Tobacco". Sure, I'm going to quit...but sometimes I just enjoy seeing some busybody get all purple in the face, or hearing some pea wit start pretend coughing loudly when I fire up a butt. Most of all, I love the idea that grown men and women feel that they have the right to tell me what to do ..for my own good...like I'm still living with my mommy.

I think that smoking in public places should be banned, I have no problem if people wish to smoke in their own houses. Its a bit silly I think that people have the choice to smoke where they like but people don't have a choice to not be surrounded by smoke (Apart from the obvious- get up and move). alcohol I'm not sure on, I know I must sound like a 70 year old woman but I hate being around really really drunk people I think it's intimidating. However I think a total ban on either would be very dangerous and would lead to more organised crime.
All things in moderation I suppose. Sorry again to sound like an old woman

Yes, honestly I think so. They're not much different from other drugs that we have banned, but then would caffeine also be banned?....because I need my chocolate. I think if alcohol was banned, people wouldn't be going out to bars and driving home drunk and causing accidents. Of course there would be black market alcohol products, but they'd probably be consumed at home in private and we'd have fewer problems with drunks. Smoking should be banned for everyone unless you are living by yourself in a building that doesn't share ventilation between units. Anyone who is still stubborn enough to want to smoke can go ahead and get lung cancer, but you shouldn't be allowed to smoke in the presence of others.

Banning items like this just creates a black market where criminal organisations can make a fortune selling on bootleg and imported versions that can be even more damaging. Prohabition in the US during the 20's and 30's help the mafia gain the power it has today.
It would be more intersting to see some illegal drugs make legal and taxable. Having a safe, clinically tested product that is not in the hands of the criminal underworld or supporting terrorist groups, like the opium feilds in Afganistan, surely can only be a good thing.

Grrr - I will never understand the psychology (especially in Britain), of forcing your own values upon others! Smoking is unhealthy. Alcohol is healthy is small doses and unhealthy in larger quantities.
I don't know about you all, but I cherish my God-given freedom. I was born with my own conscious, I have a functioning brain which allows me to use logic and perform complex decision-making. Therefore I will decide for myself whether I want to smoke (even though it's harmful) and/or drink. I respectfully ask anyone in favour to sod off and take their oppressive ideals elsewhere. Go force someone else to bend to your will. I have a decent-enough IQ and consider myself more than qualified to live any lifestyle of my choosing!

Nope.
I don't smoke, but I do drink. I like to have a glass of wine with dinner or vodka and lime to relax. I love to drink rum and coke at parties too.
People know the health risks accompanied along with alcohol and cigarettes, if they still want to smaoke and drink then it's their choice. I'm no alcoholic, but I do like to drink a little to relax and have fun. I never drink and drive, and half the time when I go out I'm the sober driver.
So, be safe and be careful when drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes.

Why just smoking and alcohol? Why not all reacreational drugs?
But we know that in reality they cannot be banned because people will merely start producing their own and we will only end up extending the hidden markets we already have.
I think that help should be provided to everyone who wants to give up smoking free of charge, and I wouls support the rationing of alcohol in a similar way to the rationing during the second world war.
I suspect people will say I am crazy....but if something is going to be done...maybe it has to be crazy!!!!

i have never smoked and drink very little alcohol, but just like the car industry, it's a huge employment provider, and in today's climate we need all the jobs we can get! [before the government and the bankers move all industry out to the third world]. and when we are all on the dole, who is going to buy all these expensive houses your building on ex-industrial sites?
i'd like to see an answer from a property developer on that one

No I think the government gets to over zealous in its banning of things We all know the health risks of alcohol and tobacco We should be in control of whether or not we want these things in our body not the government.

No it certainly should not be banned .
I certainly have no problem with restrictions as to where one can drink or smoke ,To ban either outright is TOTALLY against a smokers or drinkers rights.
