I agree with Phoenix wholeheartedly. A business does have the right to refuse service and that includes food from outside that restaurant or business. All businesses need to have on their doors a sign that reads "We reserve the right to refuse service" that way when something like that happens they can refer patrons to that sign and ask them to leave. Most people are not going to cause an argument if they see that on the door and if it's not, then patrons need to ask if it's ok to bring the food in.

I don't think it's illegal. A friend of mine did a paper in college about that. He wanted to get staff reactions and the other costumer reactions. He went to Olive Garden with food from McDonald's. When the waiter asked what he wanted, he ordered a glass of water. They all looked confused and finally a manager came over to him and asked him to leave if he wasn't going to order. My friend told him what he was doing and they had a little laugh.
He did order some real food after that.

It is not illegal.

We have done it with our Son. We took in his food except we ordered from the establishment.

To go in and expect to eat outside food without purchasing from the Establishment which you have decided to sit in would be ethically wrong.

But not illegal.

It's not illegal, but an establishment can make rules determining what can go on in their establishment. So, if they say you can't eat outside food there, you can't do it, or they can remove you from the establishment. A business can regulate what can happen in the business.

I can't speak for any other states but where I live it isn't against the law it is against public health codes. If the restaurant is caught allowing outside food in they can be fined for contamination risks and such.

IIRC, restaurants generally don't want you to bring in outside food because a) they want you to buy and eat their food, not someone else's, and b) they don't want any liability for food poisoning from food that you brought in with you.

No, but it's lame, it's rude, and distateful. Why eat other food in a resturant? It's an insult. Shameful.

I don't think it is illegal - - it is just very low-class and tacky.
