You'll receive an unofficial score right after you take the GMAT which will have your totals and percentiles for both sections (verbal and quantitative) as well as your total GMAT score. Your official scores usually takes about 20 days for the writing portion - your two essays - to be scored. If you have chosen the university that you wish to send your scores to, sometimes the school can receive your scores earlier by looking on the GMAC website and download your scores in a PDF file.

Unofficial scores from the Verbal and Quantitative multiple-choice sections, along with the Total score, are available immediately after you complete the test. Official GMAT score reports, which include the AWA score, will be mailed to you and your designated score report recipients (schools) approximately two weeks after the test. You must respond to both essays and each multiple-choice section of the test to get an official score report.

I think they give you a print out of the scores. However it seems to take about 3-4 weeks to arrive at the school of your choice. Some schools allow you to bring in the print out and will proceed your application process with it but the official scores must reach them within a certain time period.
