Sounds like something in the electrical system. If you have a short somewhere it could have been caused by the braking, and you wouldn't hear much when you try and turn it over. My mom's car had almost the exact same thing happen to her, and that's what it was. It could also be the starter, but I don't know why hitting the breaks would have caused it to cut out.
BTW- My mom's car was a 1981 Chevy Caprice, so maybe they used some bad wires or something that year.

Ok, first make sure the battery cables are clean inside and the battery posts are clean and shiny, that the engine can turn over by hand, put a wrench on the crank pulley (the bottom pulley) and see if the engine can be rotated by hand. If so make sure it can turn completely in any direction without "locking up", if it turns just so far and locks up you have broken a rod and need an engine, If you cannot turn the engine over at all, loosen the starter mouning bolts and listen for the bendix to release and try to turn the engine again. If you can turn the engine by hand now go and try to start it, if it just "clicks" you likely need a starter, listen down near the starter while someone tries to start it if the "click" is heard there change the starter and be sure to shim it properly.

Follow your wiring to make sure nothing came loose and if thats not a prob. Check your sylenoid then the starter. If its still clicking the ignition should be ok.You will kind of have to troubleshoot. If you know how to use a multimeter it will speed things up. And check your fuses. Actually check your fuses before you begin the rest of the process.

how warm is the engine.. Chevy had a long term problem that at times when warm the starter solinoid overheats since it is right next to the exahust manifold after the engine cools it should start right back up

Well maybe its something in the fuel pump. Your pump could be junk. Also your car is carborhated?? Give it a day and try it again. Seems strange but maybe the starter also could be giving u a problem

check your body ground(s), they may have been 'knocked' loose. Does the engine turn over by hand? if so, try to rock it back and forth, if the starter drive is stuck, this may cause it to drop free.
