Theoretically a women has a limited amount of possible offspring, limited by the gestation and nursing periods it is required for each baby and the fertile life of the women. But for man with more than one women it can be basically endless, specially if he is not caring for any of the children like a father is suppose to. In the movie The King and I the King of Siom, I believe, had over 20 wives and over 50 children. It showed how prosperous he was that he could afford that many children. Imagine how many children had the most prosperous king of that region....

There was a mother in the Guinness Book of records when i was a kid that had 69 children. Some were multiple births and most reached adulthood. I don't know if this record has been broken in recent years or who would want to break it!
I'm sure that some men have fathered more children than this but they have the easy bit!

WOMAN:

MAN:
Mulai Ismail (1646- 1727), who is the last caliph of morocco is said to be the man with the most children of the world. With 500 women in his harem he conceived 342 daughters and 525 sons.

MULTIPLE BIRTH:
The largest multiple birth was nine babies. This occurred in Sydney in 1971 but all the babies died. As for surviving multiples the highest I have heard of was octuplets (8) in America fairly recently (2004) where only one of the children died.

If I remember correctly, the Russian woman mentioned above was called Feodor Vassileyev (or a similar spelling that sounds like that).

I remember back in the 70's that the then record was 57 held by a Russian woman, several sets of quads, loads of triplets and more sets of twins than you could shake a stick at.

I remember hearing about a man in the mid 1980s who had fathered over 86 children.

Brittanica.com has it listed as one woman had 69 children - gave birth to them all. That's scary. The last ones had to be near to just falling out when labor started.
