I was at Heathrow Wednesday morning and was lucky enough to get a flight home to Cyprus.
The only thing I would like to complain about is the lack of information.I travelled to Heathrow by tube and when I got there I didn't have a clue what was going on.There were no signs or extra staff to help at British airways. The staff from the airport were brilliant as they whisked me through the crowd and security to make sure I made my flight!!

I have to say that I'm not in a situation where I am trying to fly anywhere for Christmas, but if I were I think I would be glad that my safety is being considered over loss of income over cancelled flights.

I know it is very frustrating to be stuck at an airport and from what I hear the problems are more with communications with passengers than anything, but surely two planes colliding in fog would be a tad more frustrating for everyone!!

From what I understand (and I'm sure our pilot friend will correct me if I'm wrong) but its not so much the being in the air with the fog as instruments can assist then, but the dangerous bit is at the airport and taking off and landing. Having large numbers of aircraft taxi-ing blindly around an airport can't be safe and by reducing the numbers of aircraft taking off and landing at airports surely they are just doing their best to increase the safety of those ones that are taking off and landing.

I dont understand the difference between flying in the dark or flying in fog? I thought you flew using the aeroplane dials and thingybobs to tell you where you are. Like the radars or sonars or whatever.
I really dont know what i'm on about.
But anyway, if its too dangerous to fly in fog then its best not to fly and people shouldnt complain. better safe than sorry.

I agree with you. Most people, myself included, no nothing about flying, all we do is sit in a chair and wait until we reach our destination. My father was in the RAF and I was brought up with aircraft but even the RAF would not take off in thick fog. Flying in thick cloud and landing and taken off in fog are two different things. Even though modern aircraft use computers these days to fly planes and have all sorts of wonderful technology to fly in all kinds of weather patterns and thick cloud, my understanding is that the landing and take off procedure is the most dangerous and is done manually.
Personally I would rather wait a few hours or a couple of days until it is safe to take off.

I agree - I'd much rather you take it slow and easy and land me safe. I can always get a different flight if I miss my connecting, and if the fog is so dense anyway, likely it's delayed as well. NOTHING in life is so important that I want you to rush and risk my life when you have time to take it slow and easy- and safe.

The complaint is not about the pilots. The complaint is that the airports book so many flights in at once with no information given out when things go wrong.

If you're in a Cessna 172, by all means, stay on the ground and don't fly. If you're in an MD-80 with a glass cockpit, fly!!! Isn't that what you get paid to do?

Why complain? Because it's not comfortable to sleep in an airport. Whether caused by an act of God or human error, it is human nature to complain.
