If you have never sedated a horse please don't do so alone. Please get a vet's assisstance. You can sedate either IM or IV, depends on the drug you are using. But again if you are not experienced please do not try to sedate a horse either way without a vet's assisstance

hopefully this question is out of curiosity and not because you are gonna try this. depending on the sedation and what they are being sedated for, can either go into the jugular vein in the neck or any large muscle mass ie neck, chest or rump. some vets will put a cathater in for the IV injections and depending on what needs are of the horse. hope this helps
PLEASE do not attempt to give your horse injections if you are not familiar with doing them wether a sedation or anything else.

you should not be sedating a horse if you dont even know where to put the needle. There are 2 form though direct (through the vein) usually neck , air cannot enter the vein, or muscular which is usually put in the rump.

Most sedation is done IV and if you do not know you have no hope of hitting the vein.
Have your vet do it.
If the vet has given you an injectible sedative that goes IM you can do it in the rump or the neck.
BUT be sure the drug you are going to use is ok to use IM some drugs will cause tissue necrosis and major problems if given IM instead of IV

Alright people, no need to be so rude! They are probably just curious. But I would not sedate him if you have no idea! Ask your vet, but mine puts them in where the neck makes a point and falls into the chest. First he pulls out the skin, though, 'cause it doesn't hurt him.

If your veterinarian gave you a sedative to keep on hand, it is usually an intramuscular (IM) injection and needs to go into a large muscle mass in the body. Often that is the muscle of the neck, or the "rump". If a veterinarian does the shot him or herself, the usually do a intravenous (IV) injection that works quicker and requires a smaller dose. If you have questions on the exact location ask your vet to help show you where to do the injection and how to administer it. If you give your horse an IM injection IV, you risk giving too large of a sedative dose. If you don't know how to give an IV injection and just "guess" you risk hitting the wrong vessel and injuring or even killing your horse. If you don't know how to give the IM injection correctly you could hit vessels in the muscle, cause an abcess or inject into the wrong "body space". Talk to your vet....

in the neck about halpfway down in a mucled area. lots of pple sedate there own horses. i do, my trainer does. why on earth would you call a vet out to dedate your horse when you could do it yourself for free.??? ji mean if you were going to clip your horse, sedate it. it is totally not that hard to do.

If you're going to give one the vet will give you a muscle injection and explain where to put it. Once the needle is in you draw the plunger back to see if it draws blood, if it does you hit a vein and need to try again. It's not hard. If you inject the wrong thing into a muscle or vein you cause major problems or death.

Perhaps you should have a licensed veterinarian sedate your horse if you don't know how to properly administer the sedation. You could hurt or even kill the animal.

Please be careful.
