This question is difficult to answer because of the phenomenoa of the "Middle Classification" of America during the 1950s, which was a response to the "red scare." As you may know, the Soviet Union preached communism which meant "class war" between the lower and upper classes, and as a result of this war all the classes would be made into one, equal class. In order to prevent "class war" from happening in the United States, the government embarked on programs, both economic and propaganda, to make most people in the United States believe they were middle class. People who believe they are "middle class" and are really poor are much less likely to favor communism. Thus, to this day, people in the United States tend to believe they are "lower middle class" typically with an income of $30,000, and "upper middle class" with incomes up to $250,000.
